Getting the most out of your Home Scan takes a little preparation. Here is a simple checklist to follow before your technician arrives.
Why Preparation Matters
Your Home Scan creates a permanent 3D record of your property. The more accessible your home is during the scan, the more complete and useful your Home Record will be.
You do not need to deep clean or renovate. Just make sure the technician can see and access the things that matter.
## The Day-Before Checklist
### Clear Walkways
The Matterport camera needs to move through every room. Make sure hallways, doorways, and room centers are clear enough to walk through comfortably.
### Open Closets and Cabinets
Your Home Record tags systems and appliances inside closets (water heaters, electrical panels, HVAC units). Leave these doors open or unlocked so the technician can
scan inside.
### Turn On Lights
Good lighting makes for a better 3D scan. Turn on overhead lights in every room, especially basements, garages, and utility spaces.
### Provide Access to All Rooms
If you have locked rooms, storage areas, or spaces behind furniture, make sure the technician can access them. Every room that is not scanned is a gap in your Home
Record.
### Gather Warranty Documents
If you have warranty paperwork, manuals, or receipts for major appliances and systems, set them out. The technician can link these to the specific items in your Home
Record.
## During the Scan
The scan takes approximately 2 hours for an average-sized home. The technician will:
- Walk through every room with the Matterport camera
- Tag major systems (HVAC, water heater, electrical panel)
- Record appliance details (make, model, serial number)
- Note paint colors and finishes
- Document any visible issues or concerns
You do not need to follow the technician around, but being available to answer questions is helpful.
## After the Scan
Your Home Record is processed and available in your FAIT dashboard within 48 hours. You can walk through the 3D model, view tagged items, and see your initial Home
Health Score.
From there, FAIT uses your Home Record data to provide personalized maintenance recommendations and accurate service pricing.
